Delivering products to our customers every day requires a vast and efficient distribution system.
Our extensive system of ships, trucks and pipelines delivers our products to bulk plants and terminals throughout the Kingdom.
From these distribution points, we safely and punctually deliver quality refined products domestically, and crude oil and natural gas liquids (NGL) to customers around the globe.
Monitoring and controlling a 20,000 kilometer (km) pipeline network requires the latest technology. From our Operations Control Center in Dhahran, our operators can remotely monitor the network at numerous locations.
The longest and most advanced gas line ever built is our 1,170 km NGL pipeline, linking Yanbu' and Shedgum.
We also operate the East-West Crude Oil pipeline and the Saudi Arabian-Bahrain crude oil pipeline.
Most of our exports of crude oil, NGL and refined products are shipped by sea.
Vela International Marine Limited, our wholly owned shipping subsidiary, operates a large fleet of Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) built to the highest technology standards. In 2009, the Vela fleet safely transported more than 1 million bpd of crude oil to customers primarily in the United States and Europe.
Vela is a leader in the maritime transportation industry, widely recognized for its safety and operational efficiency.
In June 2009, 19 Vela vessels won the Jones F. Devlin Award from the Chamber of Shipping of America for going over two years without a lost-time accident.
We own and operate Kingdom-wide storage facilities for crude oil, refined products, refrigerated liquefied petroleum gas (RLPG) and natural gas condensate, which amount to an overall capacity of 200 million barrels.
Our facilities include terminal tank farms, refinery crude charge and finished product storage facilities, product storage bulk plants and loading and unloading facilities.
Through our 19 bulk plant operations, we annually supply around 375 million barrels of refined products to about 5,000 domestic bulk customers.
We’ve automated our storage facilities to better manage bulk product sales. Shifting from truck top-loading to bottom-loading, as well as adding a new Terminal Management System (TMS) and subsystems such as Radar Tank Gauging (RTG) and metering control have made our operations more safe and efficient.
Our storage facilities undergo cyclical upgrades to ensure a high standard of service and to meet the local demand for refined products.
We’re always looking at innovative ways to tackle distribution challenges and improve our customer service. We recently launched an online accounting solution that streamlines the distribution of shipping documents.
We’ve also developed an in-house network optimization model to analyze future demand growth and identify bottlenecks in our distribution system.
