The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is endowed with two major fossil fuel sources, crude oil and natural gas. Worldwide, gas is the fastest growing energy source.

The worldwide demand for gas is driven by the power and industrial sectors due to its smaller environmental footprint as an energy source.

Reserves of natural gas in company-managed fields total 284.8 trillion cubic feet.

In the company’s overall gas operations, natural gas is processed to produce clean fuel (methane, or sales gas) and feedstock (methane, ethane, propane, butane and natural gasoline).

Methane and ethane are consumed entirely by the Kingdom’s utilities and industry. Excess propane, butane and natural gasoline (also known as natural gas liquids, or NGL) that are not used by the domestic petrochemicals industry are exported to world markets.

International recognition

In 2011, we earned international recognition from the International Gas Processors Association (IGPA) and the U.S. National Safety Council (NSC) for outstanding safety performance in 2010.

The IGPA awarded the Perfect Record Award to several Saudi Aramco gas plants including the Ju'aymah and Yanbu' NGL fractionation plants, and the Haradh, Shedgum, 'Uthmaniyah, Hawiyah and Khursaniyah gas plants.

Master Gas System upgrade

In 2011, we developed a new technology called Online Predictive Model for the Master Gas System that provides real-time data to improve the decision-making process and optimize network performance under varying operational scenarios. It enables us to determine the survival time of the network under current operating conditions and allows us to simulate hypothetical operating scenarios and predictions for survival time in the event of a major gas plant shutdown.
