The Hawiyah Gas Plant, located about 220 kilometers south of Dhahran, became operational in December 2001.

The plant was originally designed to process 1.6 billion standard cubic feet per day (scfd) of raw non-associated gas from wells in the Ghawar field and produce 1.4 billion scfd of sales gas and 170,000 bpd of condensate.  The plant was the first company plant to process non-associated gas (gas produced directly from gas reservoirs and not a secondary product of oil production).

The Project Management Institute named the Hawiyah Gas Plant its Project of the Year for 2002.

In 2009, work was completed on a project to expand the plant’s processing capacity by 800 million scfd, raising the total capacity to 2.4 billion scfd.
