Preserving Health

Awareness programs keep employees informed about how to stay fit and
healthy.

The goals of medicine are to preserve health, to restore health and to relieve suffering. To achieve these goals, two medical disciplines came into existence: preventive medicine and curative medicine.

Preventive medicine comprises the following three objectives:

  • Primary Prevention strives to avoid the occurrence of disease or injury. Prominent examples of this prevention would be food and water sanitation, immunization against communicable diseases, and water fluoridation.
  • Secondary Prevention aims at early detection and intervention before the incidence or discovery of any major affliction. It is achieved by screening programs, such as neonatal examinations for congenital hip dislocation, periodic mammography, glaucoma, blood pressure screening, etc. Also, occupational screening programs are performed, which include hearing conservation (audiometric testing), pulmonary protection (asbestos, silica mitigation), and radiation protection.
  • Tertiary Prevention intends to minimize the complications of disease or injury. For example, instruction in diabetes helps ultimately to reduce ulcers, and gangrene of the foot.
